My favorite windbreaker/rainjacket has always been the North Face Venture. I ordered my 3rd one in 5 years (Deep Water Blue color) and was pissed off to see that North Face ruined this good-looking navy jacket by adding a ridiculous royal blue "trim" to it. Returned it immediately and I doubt I will be buying North Face products anytime soon: if something is a perennial best-seller and you've sold millions, DON'T change it!

Anyway, I've always bought Helly clothes, as I grew up on the ocean and this is what Helly does best (good-looking clothes and accessories which do well in wet and windy environments). Searching for a replacement for my beloved Venture, I loved the look of this Dubliner (though I was tempted by its little brother, the Seven). Having worn it for a while, my love has grown cold and I rather long for my Venture. Perhaps the Seven would be better.

It is a nicely-made jacket which will last for years, no doubt about it. It does run small but with a nice slim fit (if you're slim for your size). My major annoyance is that it is not an all-seasons jacket: its lining is more thermal than a thin jacket like the Venture, which is an all-year jacket when used with a zip fleece in colder months. On a warm, humid, rainy day, this Dubliner would be a sauna, as opposed to the light, breathable Venture, and on cold wintry days it is not anywhere thermal enough and, because of its aforementioned slim fit, you cannot have a fleece underneath as you can the Venture. My only other complaints are the lack of an interior pocket, the smallness of the outside pockets, and the highness/stiffness of the collar (giving one the Count Dracula look).

Too bad. Such a nice-looking jacket. I'll keep it, despite its flaws: in moderate temperature, it will be fine.

Note: I just read one reviewer who suggested a thermal base layer to make the jacket cold-worthy. Way too much effort involved. You shouldn't have to tailor the clothes you wear to accomodate a jacket. That's the beauty of the zip fleece: wear what you want and if it's too cold, add the fleece under the jacket; not too cold, wear the jacket alone. Easy. But the Dubliner is cut too slim for that.
